What is the Healthy Schools Rating Scheme?

The Healthy Schools Rating Scheme is a voluntary scheme for schools. It recognises and encourages their contribution to supporting pupils’ health and wellbeing.

Schools can engage in a voluntary self-assessment exercise and receive a rating based on questions about PE, food and active travel.

Participating schools will receive an award for their performance, and information on how to improve their healthy living policies.

Schools can use the award to show parents how they have performed.

How to participate

The Healthy Schools Rating Scheme is linked to the Active Lives Children and Young People survey.

To join Healthy Schools, your school must take part in the Active Lives survey and complete the associated Teachers’ Survey. You cannot just complete a Teachers’ Survey.

Designed and delivered by Sport England and IPSOS MORI, Active Lives provides a world-leading approach to gathering data on how young people engage with sport and physical activity.

As an Active Partnership, we coordinate the Active Lives survey for schools in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. If your school has not been randomly selected to complete the survey, you may opt in to take part. This will enable you to access the Healthy Schools Rating Scheme and to gain insight into how pupils engage with sport and physical activity.

To opt into Active Lives, or to find out more about associated deadline dates, please contact Sarah Taylor.

Please note: if your school appears on the IPSOS MORI randomly selected sample of schools for any term across the academic year, or appears on the reserve list, you will not be able to opt-in during this academic year.
