Safeguarding: Guidance and Resources

Safeguarding is a 365-day responsibility for any club or community group, so it’s important to stay up to date with guidance and advice. Here are some organisations that offer resources and support to help you create a safe and welcoming environment for all. 

1. Ann Craft Trust

The Ann Craft Trust is a national charity that focuses on safeguarding adults. Here, you’ll find templates, frameworks and research to minimise the risk of abuse of adults.

 Safeguarding Adults in Sport and Activity Advice and Training is a project funded by Sport England, Sport Wales and UK Sport to help sport and activity organisations to develop best practice in safeguarding adults. 

2. Buddle

Sport England’s free learning tool (previously known as Club Matters) provides the latest information, training, and tools that cover an array of topics, including safeguarding, to strengthen your physical activity offer.

3. Child Protection In Sport Unit (CPSU)

Part of the NSPCC, the CPSU works specifically with sports organisations to help them protect those in their care. They offer training, tools and tips on putting safeguarding practices in place.

4. National Governing Bodies (NGBs)

NGBs are often aligned with national laws and regulations regarding safeguarding. By following their guidelines, you ensure that your organisation complies with legal standards. They also provide standardised safeguarding practices that are widely recognised, trusted and followed across your sport or activity.

5. National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC)

The NSPCC offer a wealth of resources on safeguarding children, including training courses, policy templates and support for parents.

6. Our Streets Now

Our Streets Now are an organisation aiming to create a world free from public sexual harassment. They have a section dedicated to sport facilities and clubs which outlines research, templates and training to help you support those who have experienced sexual harassment and prevent it from again.

7. Play Their Way

The Play Their Way movement aims to support coaches to give children and young people a choice to shape their physical activity experiences, create space for them to voice their views and enable them to take ownership of their development journey. The website hosts a range of resources like worksheets, videos and podcasts to help coaches adopt a child-first coaching philosophy.

8. Sport Welfare Officer Network

Our Sport Welfare Officers, Sarah and Sue, are working closely with local club welfare officers to support them to deliver inclusive and positive experiences for both children and adults.

 9. UK Coaching

Whatever your role, UK Coaching will help you connect with the people in front of you. Their work covers accessible coaching and participant-focused coaching, and have a range of resources, events and training to help you achieve this.

 The UK Coaching Duty To Care badge is a free, online course that covers 6 pillars of learning including safeguarding, inclusion and mental health well-being. This information will help you offer your participants the right support during their active journeys.
