Active Lives Adult Survey Launches 2022-23 Findings

Date: 26 April 2024   Author: Energise Me

Since 2016, an additional two million adults in the UK have become more active!

The latest findings reveal that from November 2022 to November 2023, 63.4% of UK adults met the Chief Medical Officers’ guidelines of engaging in 150 minutes or more of moderate-intensity physical activity each week.

What is Active Lives Data?

Conducted by Sport England, the Active Lives Survey gathers data on people’s participation in and attitudes towards sport and physical activity. This is done annually for both adults (aged 16 and over) and children and young people (5-16).

The newest data for adults, between the period of November 2022 to November 2023, was published in April of this year.

This Year's Key Findings

Some of the national highlights include:

  • Activity levels for those aged 55 and over are the highest they’ve been since records began, with those aged 75 driving this trend.
  • One million more adults walked or cycled for travel.
  • A person’s age, sex, gender, ethnicity, socio-economic group, whether they have a disability or long-term health condition, and the place they live in are all significant factors impacting a person’s relationship with sport and physical activity.

Active Lives in Hampshire and Isle of Wight

Since the strategy launched in 2021 the number of inactive people has reduced from 24.4% to 22.1%, that means 37,900 people are less inactive.

However, that means there’s still 367,000 people (22.1% of the county population) who are doing less than 30 minutes of activity a week.

What's Next

Even though data helps us understand trends and make decisions, it’s important to remember that it only provides a snapshot of the story, for example, what made it possible for someone to step into a physical activity space or why they chose to stay.

So why not tell us what you’ve done to encourage physical activity across Hampshire and Isle of Wight communities or what you’ve learnt throughout your work by submitting a We Can Be Active Win!
