Since 2016, an additional two million adults in the UK have become more active!
The latest findings reveal that from November 2022 to November 2023, 63.4% of UK adults met the Chief Medical Officers’ guidelines of engaging in 150 minutes or more of moderate-intensity physical activity each week.
Conducted by Sport England, the Active Lives Survey gathers data on people’s participation in and attitudes towards sport and physical activity. This is done annually for both adults (aged 16 and over) and children and young people (5-16).
The newest data for adults, between the period of November 2022 to November 2023, was published in April of this year.
Some of the national highlights include:
Since the strategy launched in 2021 the number of inactive people has reduced from 24.4% to 22.1%, that means 37,900 people are less inactive.
However, that means there’s still 367,000 people (22.1% of the county population) who are doing less than 30 minutes of activity a week.

You can also explore the data you are interested in by building a query on Active Lives Online. Here, you can deep dive into data for participation by age or gender, active travel, or activity (to name a few!).
Even though data helps us understand trends and make decisions, it’s important to remember that it only provides a snapshot of the story, for example, what made it possible for someone to step into a physical activity space or why they chose to stay.
So why not tell us what you’ve done to encourage physical activity across Hampshire and Isle of Wight communities or what you’ve learnt throughout your work by submitting a We Can Be Active Win!
