Beyond Walking: The impact of older adults strength and mobility

Date: 3 January 2025   Author: Energise Me

It’s a family affair for one weightlifting club in Eastleigh, as coach Lizzie Havers started an over 55s group with her parents in mind.

The strength and mobility sessions at Lakeside Weightlifting work on stretching and strengthening muscle groups with bands, dumbbells and weights. All the exercises are designed to help older adults with daily movements.

The inspiration for the group came from Lizzie’s own parents, Maggie and Steve. Although they were keen walkers, they were starting to struggle with daily activities as they got older, including getting up out of a chair and getting onto the floor.

As a result of attending the sessions, their confidence has soared and they’re much happier, being able to help each other and continue their daily activities around the home. They’re amazed at what they’ve been able to achieve.

Keeping active is one of the most important things we can do, helping us live life to the full as we grow older. As well as helping us feel fit and strong, activity can improve sleep and mood and help us stay independent for longer. Adding strength and balance into our routines can help us continue with daily activities and also reduce the risk of falls.

Groups also offer great social benefits, with Steve saying Lakeside feels more like a community. Each session ends with a stretch and time for a cup of tea and a natter.

Take a look at their story:
