Getting active at home for older adults
Find all you need to get active at home as an older adult.
Date: 18 September 2024 Author: Energise Me
The latest campaign from Live Longer Better Hampshire launches on 23rd September.
The Fall Proof plan encourages older adults that are doing little to no physical activity to begin by making small changes in their every-day lives.
Being less active as you get older can impact on strength and balance and can increase the risk of falling over. Exercises designed to improve muscle strength and challenge balance, can reduce the risk by improving posture and coordination.
Alongside social media and radio advertising, professionals that work with older people are being asked to share beginner movements with those they care for.
Activity prompt cards can be downloaded and each activity comes with an image, challenge rating and easy to follow instructions. From heel-toe walks whilst waiting for the kettle to boil to adding a few extra steps in whilst going up the stairs, each is designed to fit it with existing routines around the home.
As well as reducing the risk of falling, moving more can help increase confidence and energy levels, as well as help older people live independently for longer.
